Charlotte Kaufman grew up in Alaska and started traveling internationally at the age of 16. A sailor since 2005, she and her family were part of a dramatic at-sea rescue in the spring of 2014 while en route to the South Pacific. Her memoir about the event is forthcoming.
After losing their sailboat, she and her husband moved their family to Mammoth Lakes, California, swapping adventures at sea for the mountains. In 2017 she founded Mammoth Women Writers, a writing group dedicated to building a community of women and non-binary writers in the Eastern Sierras.

Nica Waters currently lives in land-locked Charlottesville, Virginia with Jeremy, her husband of 25 years, and her second child, Bee, a senior in high school. She caught the sailing bug from her best friend in high school, taught sailing in the Caribbean on college breaks, and jumped in with both feet when she and Jeremy purchased their 28’ Bristol Channel Cutter (Calypso) in 1992. They’re currently in the throes of a massive refit of the boat, prepping to leave for “as long as it’s fun” in the fall of 2019. She blogs and podcasts about the challenges and joys of cruising (and getting ready to go) at fit2sail.com.
